Unfortunately, Benedicte’s new stepfather refused to accept the child under the new household and accused her of sorcery. She was cast onto the street and is now under the care of an orphanage in Lubumbashi. RESULT: 45%

BACKGROUND: Zaina is another young girl who has fallen victim to ludicrous accusations of sorcery. She has never met her father, and her mother abandoned her following the accusations of witchcraft.

BACKGROUND: Fany was abandoned by both of her parents following their divorce. She was a street child for some time and is now on her way to completing her basic schooling.

BACKGROUND: After her mother passed away, Joelle was under the care of members of her family. Unable to afford her care, they ejected her from their home. Joelle lived on the streets for some time until she was welcomed into Maison Magone.

BACKGROUND: Masengo was under the care of her grandmother as a result of losing both of her parents. She was later accused of sorcery and ejected from her grandmother’s care.

BACKGROUND: Julie is yet another child living on the streets after being accused of sorcery. None of the members of her family can afford to provide any type of care for her well-being or education.

BACKGROUND: Originally from Kolwezi, Laeticia rebelled against her parents and ran away from home. An investigation is taking place to find out the reasons of her revolt.

BACKGROUND: Mwampiana found herself in the streets after the divorce of her parents. Neither side of the family had the means to care for her, and she is now under the care of an orphanage.

BACKGROUND: Rehema’s grandmother raised her after her mother passed away and her father was nowhere to be found. Rehema came to Magone Fille House because her grandmother could no longer financially support her.

BACKGROUND: Following the death of her mother at a very young age, Victorine was given the responsibility of caring for her mute/deaf father, which included preparing his meals and caring for him. She ended up destitute in the street and later found her way to Maison Magone.
RESULT: 54.1%

BACKGROUND: Yowa is a young orphan girl abandoned by both sides of her family. She found herself living on the streets but is now under the care of an orphanage and is on track with her schooling.

BACKGROUND: After her mother’s death, her father remarried. Unwanted by her father’s new spouse and by other members of her family, she lived on the streets before being welcome by the Magone Filles Home.
RESULT: 52.8%

Deborah Mujinga Wa Banza

AGE: 22
GRADE: 3rd year (Elementary)
SCHOOL: École Salongo
BACKGROUND: Dorcas Mujinga wa Banze (Deborah), better known as the “Survivor of Kasala”, is one of the many victims of the war that has plagued the DRC since 1998. As a child, her village was attacked and set on fire. Though burned badly, miraculously Deborah survived, however her family did not.

After meeting Deborah in April, 2008, in Lubumbashi, and being touched by her story, the Georges Malaika Foundation decided to assist Deborah in completing her technical training.  Deborah is thriving beautifully at school, where she is learning how to be a seamstress.
RESULT: 51%
